Brooks Junior High School and Grasslands Public Schools are excited to welcome students into the new BJHS for the first time on Tuesday, September 8.

Doors will open to students at 8:00 a.m. As everyone gets familiar with the new building and school grounds, there are a few important changes families should know before opening day.

Student Entrances

There are two main entrances students will use:

  • North East Main Entrance

    — accessible from 5th Avenue East. This is also the main entrance for parents and visitors and provides access to the school office.

  • South West Main Entrance

    — accessible from the new bus lane and sidewalks from 4th and 5th Avenues East.

All other exterior doors are exit-only doors and will remain locked from the outside.

Parent Parking and Student Drop-Off

Parent and visitor parking and student drop-off will take place along 5th Avenue East in front of the school.

Families are encouraged to use the parking spaces on the school side of 5th Avenue. If parking on the residential side, students should use the designated crosswalks when crossing the street.

Grasslands staff and RCMP will be outside along 5th Avenue on opening day to help direct traffic, support students and answer questions.

New Bus Lane

The new bus lane runs one way from 4th Avenue East to 5th Avenue East along the west side of the school.

Grasslands buses will use the lane to drop students off at the South West Entrance before continuing toward 5th Avenue East.

Please note that this lane is for Grasslands school buses and emergency response vehicles only.

Construction Around the School

Landscaping and some final construction work are still being completed around the new school.

Families will continue to see construction fencing around portions of the property to help safely direct students and visitors.

The old BJHS property is now an active construction site and should not be entered. Demolition of the old school is expected to begin in November, with construction of the new multi-sport synthetic turf field complex planned for spring 2027.

Updated Bell Schedule

To account for instructional time lost last week, the BJHS bell schedule has been adjusted.

Period 1 will begin at:

  • 8:37 a.m. Monday to Thursday

  • 8:45 a.m. Friday

A Few Additional Reminders

Students should bring a clean pair of indoor-only shoes as part of their regular school supplies.

The traditional opening-day pizza lunch will be postponed while landscaping is still underway and will be rescheduled for a later date.

Bike and scooter racks will be available outside both main entrances. E-bikes and scooters cannot be stored inside the school and should be securely locked outside or left at home.

Athletics information will also be shared with students and families shortly.

Getting Ready for Opening Day

Families are encouraged to review the school-yard map, parking information and entrance photos before Tuesday so students know where to go when they arrive.

The goal is to make the first day in the new BJHS exciting, memorable and, most importantly, safe for students, families and staff.

We can’t wait to welcome BJHS students into their new school on September 8!
